Your Guide to Oral Appliance Therapy for Sleep Apnea
FAQ’s
What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Sleep Disordered Breathing?
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common condition in which the upper airway repeatedly narrows or collapses during sleep. This blockage reduces or stops airflow, lowers blood oxygen levels, and briefly wakes the brain to reopen the airway, causing disrupted sleep and loud gasping.
What is Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT)?
The cornerstone of the field. A qualified dentist determines the design and fits a custom mouthguard-like device called a Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD). Spear Education-Trained dentists can use a process called the Seattle Protocol, developed by Dr. Jeff Rouse, to differentiate which appliance will best treat an individual patient.
How does OAT Work?
The appliance gently holds the lower jaw and tongue slightly forward during sleep, which opens the airway, prevents throat collapse, and reduces snoring.
What is Nasal Breathing Therapy?
Nasal breathing therapy is a specialized training and rehabilitation process designed to help individuals transition from mouth breathing to natural, efficient nasal respiration. It utilizes external breathing aids and targeted exercises to strengthen orofacial muscles, clear nasal blockages, and regulate the nervous system to improve oxygen intake and overall wellness. DeSanti & Linden Dentistry is proud to be a Professional Partner of Intake Breathing, helping our patients to improve their health.
What if I have been told that I clench or grind in my sleep?
Beyond Obstructive Sleep Apnea, dental sleep professionals may also treat sleep-related bruxism (teeth grinding) and orofacial pain, also know as Temporo-Mandibular Disorder.
